Building Your Passion Into A Business

For Free Forever?

Cliff played an audio feedback from a listener.  The listener was concerned that podcast listeners might have the impression that Successful Life Mindset has implied that you can do something you’re passionate about for free for the rest of your life. He disagrees and would like the story set straight.

Both Cliff and Tracy don’t want anyone to be left with that impression. The way to determine what you’re passion in life is would be to ask yourself, “what is the one thing that I would do for free even if I had to work forty or more hours a week to pay the bills.” Then, once you realize what you’re passionate about, find a way to turn it into a business

Tracy has two businesses. One he really likes. It is a marketing company and he loves the people he works with, but the other business, filmmaking is his passion. He loves making movies that not only entertain, but also inspire people. Likewise, Cliff loves podcasting, but podcasting is not his passion. His passion is to share his life to educate, encourage, entertain and inspire others.

Two that found their passion

A man that worked in the financial world took one of Cliff’s classes on podcasting. He asked Cliff, via email, if he should begin a podcast on Small Business Consulting or Personal Financial Advice. The man gave reasons for both and told of his career in the field. Cliff replied that while either would be fine, he didn’t feel the man’s passion about either in his email. The man answered that if passion was the deciding factor he would choose either biking or wooden boats. Once passion entered into the equation, it changed everything. Since then the man started a podcast on wooden boats and is quite successful. You can see his work at hookedonwoodenboats.com. He has completed 33 weekly podcasts and is a success.

Tracy knows a woman that had a passion for quilting. She quilted as a hobby for years. She had become so good at it she was asked to speak about it, wrote a book about it and now quilts for a career. She asked if Tracy would use one of her quilts in his movie, “A Christmas Snow”. Tracy has her quilt on the back of the sofa and Kathleen uses it in a scene.

Both of these people chose to find that thing they were passionate about and eventually turn it into a business. Tracy and Cliff did the same thing. Cliff worked in insurance and wanted to podcast full-time. His initial idea was to be “on mic” forever. He has adjusted his dream to podcast for the sheer joy of it, while doing other podcasting work such as consulting and training to pay the bills.

Giving It All Away

Although the phrase “give it all away for free” might be slightly misleading, it has a basis of truth.

Cliff has 259 recorded podcasts of Podcast Answer Man available for free. If you have any question about podcasting, the answer is there. Even though you can listen to it all and never hire him, he has people tell him all the time they don’t have time to sift through the information to find and/or fix what they need. They would rather pay him for one-on-one time and get it done.

Tracy has made 3 movies and written 2 books to-date. He has provided many of each product at no cost to those that could benefit from them and their lessons on life. He has put in countless hours to help others at no cost, yet the success comes.

Other Side of the Coin

If you reverse this thought process, you will find that those that find something to make money, lots of it quickly and easily are usually not nearly so successful. When passion for your work is missing, either you won’t be successful or you won’t be happy.

A Cliff Inspirational Quote

“Find something that you love to do so much that you’d be willing to do it all day long for free and then become so excellent at that one thing that people would eventually line up to pay you for it.”

Things to Remember

  • Find your passion, then find a way to build it into a business.
  • Give it away and you still win.
  • Working for the money doesn’t guarantee success.

What is Really Causing Their Pain?

How We Measure the World

Tracy met a man that made a profound statement about how we measure the world.  “We measure ourselves by our intentions while we measure others by their actions.”  He thought about this and realized how true it is.  We know why we say or do something and expect others to understand, but we determine how we feel about/react to someone else by what we hear/see.

Cliff heard an Andy Stanley (pastor at Northpointe church in Atlanta, GA) quote, “The more successful you become in life, the less accessible you become to others.”  This caused him to wonder is it necessary to explain your reason when you can’t accommodate someone.  If you don’t explain your reason, will they think you’ve changed your commitment?  Tracy responded with a Trost original quote – “The most misunderstood words are the ones not spoken.”  Tracy suggested we do explain, when possible.

The Owie and the Scab

Tracy used the example of an owie and a scab to illustrate how we sometimes deal with others. They have an owie/wound/underlying hurt, but all we see is the scab, that layer of protection during their healing.  If we could see the hurt and apply a little ointment to helping that healing to help them, we should, but often we pick off the scab and expose the hurt and cause them more pain, or a get a reaction we don’t understand.  The scab reforms to protect that wound.  We all have owies and scabs to hide our wounds from others.  The biggest lie is that we are the only one experiencing something.  Try to see the owie under the scab.

We often act like the person we wish we were.  Tracy quoted Muse Watson when he said, “Lord, help me to be the man my dog thinks I am.”

Shaking Off the Dirt!

Tracy received the same story over a couple of days from several people, including Cliff.  It is the story of a farmer with an aging donkey.  The donkey had trouble seeing and while walking across the field fell into an old well.  The donkey began braying and the farmer went out to see what the trouble was.  He found the donkey stuck down in the well.  He called several other farmers to get ideas of how to get the donkey out. One suggestion was to set up a big rig, but that would be expensive and the donkey was old.  Finally, they decided just to bury the donkey.  They began to shovel dirt into the well.  After a few shovels full, the donkey stepped up and shook off the dirt.  They continued to shovel.  The donkey continued to step up and shake off the dirt.  Finally, they could see the head of the donkey.  With a few more shovels full, the donkey was at ground level and stepped out of the well.  The moral of the story is that when we think things are at their worse and we are stuck in the pits, we should use the trials (dirt) thrown our way and step up; one step at a time, until we’re able to get back on solid ground.  The donkey could have taken a victim mentality and just lay down and die, but he took the owner mentality and chose to step up and live.

Perspective and Purpose

Tracy woke up a few days ago and thought about some things not going as well as he wanted them to.  He was feeling a little sorry for himself.  He read a story about a little girl with cancer that was so excited because she got to leave the hospital for a short time and go to see a movie with her family.  He realized how self-focused his attitude was.  He posted this on Facebook and got several responses.  One that stuck with him was posted by a man that said “Having a rough day?  Put your hand over your heart.  Feel that?  That’s purpose.”  Tracy thought about it and knew every day he has purpose.

Cliff said the five things to be happy are:

  • Free your heart from hatefulness, forgive!
  • Free your mind from worry, worries often don’t happen.
  • Live simply and appreciatively.
  • Give more.
  • Expect less from people and more from God.

Tracy has a friend that has golden time each morning.  He thinks about five things every morning for which he is thankful.  Tracy has started doing this too.  His wife and children are always in the top three.

Cliff said there is a kind of “Catch-22”, if how you can grow is your motivation is your motivation the right motivation.  Tracy said ask yourself, “Am I doing the right things or doing things right?”  Cliff said it all comes down to chapter nine of one of his favorite books – “Crush It”.  The chapter titled “The Best Marketing Strategy Ever” consists of a single word: CARE.  If you don’t care, others will know.  Tracy and Cliff said caring is key to success.  They both care about their family, friends, fans and customers.  They care about people in general.  It effects how they live their lives and in turn affects their ultimate success in life.

Things to remember:

  • Others measure you by your actions.
  • Shake off the dirt and step up!
  • CARE

What If My Passion Is…

That Is Impossible… Or is It?

Emails have come in that say they disagree with some of the information shared on this podcast.  Particularly, the idea that you can be successful at anything you are passionate about; you can live your life to its greatest potential.

The thing is it can’t be just about what you like or would like to do/be, such as a pro football player.  It must be something you are truly passionate about; something that drives you, something you would do for free even if it meant doing something you disliked 40 hours or more a week to be able to do the other thing that you loved.

Not Everyone’s Passion Is The Same

Tracy gave the example of his brother who operates a printing press.  He loves what he does.  He excels at what he does.  He is so good at it that the equipment company that makes the press sends him to other customers experiencing problems to fix their issues.  He is successful and living his life to its fullest potential because he is living his passion – his dream.  It’s not about how much money you make or any worldly status that comes with the job, it’s about being happy at what you do.

It Still Takes Work

Cliff said many people tell him they would like to do what he does – be a full-time podcaster, but they don’t know how.  The first thing he asks them is what they are willing to do to make it happen.  Many just want the “magic bullet”, they want to wake up the next day and be a successful podcaster.

It’s like someone picking up a cookbook and becoming a chef.  When the passion is there it’s not just food, it is truly an amazing meal because of the love for what they are doing.

2012 Is…

Cliff and Tracy have given names to 2012 to express their goals for this year.  Cliff refers to 2012 as the year of “Even bigger dreams”, while Tracy refers to it as the year of “Growth”.

Rewrite Your Core Beliefs, Create a New Story of You

Tracy talked about a Facebook post of his that some people disagreed with.  The post was a quote from Napoleon Hill.

“When you take charge of your mind, you take charge of your life. When you understand your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and desires, you can direct them to any end you choose. Taking charge of your mind is a thoughtful, reflective, solitary process.  Only you can come to understand the complex inner workings of your own mind, and you must be willing to spend the time and effort that gaining such insight requires.” ~ Napoleon Hill

The book by Steve Chandler, “The Story of You”, explains that we accept the opinions of others about us as truth and act according to those truths.  Once we examine those truths and decide it is not true or no longer true, we need to accept the new truth.  We will begin change reactions to line up with the new truth.

Cliff talked about a book that goes along with that by T. Harve Eker, “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth”.  It too, says all that has happened to us – the events that shaped who we are and how we react to each situation is a program stored in our subconscious mind.  When we’re driving and someone cuts us off, do we say poor guy and pray for them or do we want to chase them down and get back at them?  Our reactions are based on the programming we’ve accepted over the course of our lives up to now.  If we don’t like our reaction or no longer believe that to be a valid reaction, we need to rewrite that file in our brain to the proper reaction for us and train ourselves to pull that reaction out of our brain’s file cabinet whenever the same thing happens the next time.

It’s Not What Happens To You, But What You Do With It That Matters

Cliff and Tracy gave examples of people that were able to own their lives, their situation, and regardless of how dire those circumstances are, they chose to take the owner mentality over the victim mentality.  In Tracy’s book, “Just Believe”, he wrote a chapter about having a positive mental attitude based on the true-life accident that left a young man a paraplegic.  The man could have given up and said ‘woe is me’, but he chose to own his life and became the owner of a successful chain of gyms.  Likewise, Cliff knows a man that blogs since being in an accident and becoming a quadriplegic with a terminal condition.  He began blogging and became very successful at what he does.  You can read his incredible story at gspn.tv/morrow and be inspired!

Quote of the day

“When you take charge of your mind, you take charge of your life. When you understand your thoughts, feelings, emotions, and desires, you can direct them to any end you choose. Taking charge of your mind is a thoughtful, reflective, solitary process.  Only you can come to understand the complex inner workings of your own mind, and you must be willing to spend the time and effort that gaining such insight requires.”  ~ Napoleon Hill

Things to remember:

  • Are you living to your greatest potential?
  • Are you a victim or an owner mentality person?
  • If you don’t like your reaction – change it!

What is True Success? Episode 31

Where Do You Carry Your Sunshine?

Tracy asked Cliff how he’s doing to which Cliff replied, “I’m doing extremely well”.  Tracy told him he liked that answer and would expect nothing less because Cliff is such a positive, glass half-full person.  Cliff shared a quote, one he truly believes and lives by that is from a fellow podcaster who often says, “I choose to carry my sunshine on the inside.”

Choose to Be Happy

Tracy told the story of Robin Williams, stand-up comedian, who wanted very much to have a show (sit-com) of his own.  He was able to achieve that dream when he landed a small role on “Happy Days” that led to the show “Mork and Mindy”.  The trouble was his fame made him miserable.  He drank, did drugs and suffered a divorce.  The success didn’t make him happy.  He had to decide to be happy.  We must also choose to be happy.

What is True Success?

Cliff knows he is truly a success!  A man Cliff admires received an email asking for a podcast guru reference.  The man not only recommended Cliff as the go to person for all things podcast, but said Cliff was a good Christian man as well.  The definition of success is not about the work we do, it’s about the person we are.  The person we live and show others every day.

Cliff played an audio email from a listener.  She shared that she was touched by last week’s podcast that talked about trigger thoughts.  She has battled anorexia for years and the information shared helped her to realize what she hears or sees that trigger her eating issues.  Tracy and Cliff are very happy to know that the things they talk about, the experiences they share are having an effect on others.  That is the real measure of success; helping others.

Success if moving toward a pre-defined goal.  That definition fits into the three keys to success that Tracy has shared in earlier podcasts.  Determine the goal and believe it can be achieved.  Write it down and move toward that goal every day.  Share your goal with others so they can help you achieve it.

The A.R.E. Principle

The A.R.E. Principle is explained in the book, “Creating the Magic” by Lee Cockrell.  Mr. Cockrell ran Disneyworld in Florida for about 10 years.  He was brought on board after his success with opening and operating Disneyworld Euro.  The Florida company was a mess with a hierarchal management and a large percentage of employee turnover.  He applied the A.R.E. principle to pull people into his plan to achieve success.  A is appreciate, R is recognize and E is encourage.  Using A.R.E. helps build friendship, loyalty and teamwork.  Each day, whether it is for a business or in our daily lives, we need to ask ourselves how can we appreciate, recognize and encourage those around us.  People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

Things to remember:

  • Choose to be happy!
  • Learn what triggers your reactions, then adjust.
  • Look for ways to appreciate, recognize and encourage those around you.

Remembering Dr. David H. Foster

Cliff’s mentor and encourager, Dr. David H. Foster, a pastor in Nashville, TN, passed away.  He preached the last sermon in a series, “Six People You’ll Meet on the Way to Heaven”, Sunday morning, was so energized he skipped lunch and went for a seven mile run, spent the rest of the afternoon with family, went to bed about eight PM and was found the next morning by his wife.

Dr. Foster was a very giving man.  He had been on a few of Cliff’s podcasts before and was scheduled to have a podcast with Cliff recorded in the Foster home next weekend.  Dr. Foster said it is not what you do, say or have, but how you make people feel that they will remember when you’re gone.  Cliff was honored to have this man of influence support him and encourage him.  Cliff said one thought that came to him when he learned of Dr. Foster’s death, was “who can he turn to now”.  He said that was a little silly because the answer is obviously – God.

What Is Your Legacy?

Tracy asked Cliff what the strongest thing Dr. Foster left with Cliff.  Cliff said it would be the knowledge that God loves him, what he does is important and that what he does matters, but mostly that God loves him.

We need to live our lives to influence others positively; to live our lives as an example for others.  What legacy are we going to leave behind?  We need to help others reach their goals and obtain their success/happiness to be truly happy ourselves.  Life is not about us, it’s about those around us.

Living in the Now

So many people are not enjoying life today because they are living / looking forward to the future.  If they only had a bigger house, a new car, the next great gadget then they’d be happy, but when they obtain that goal, they still aren’t happy because they have moved on to the next great goal in their lives.  They need to be happy with what they have today as well as plan for the future.  They need to stop and enjoy their life.

Cliff struggles with busy work to keep up to where he is today.  He is happy with his life, but still struggles with not working as much as possible.  Tracy too often feels guilty if he’s not working.  He is currently in Florida on a family vacation and although he feels guilty if he’s not working, he promised his family he would work as little as possible.  Sometimes we worry about keeping income coming in.  Worry is believing the worst will happen and faith is believing the best will happen.  If you focus on the positive, your life will be more positive.  Worry is fear and we need to conquer the fear.

Do You Trust God to Step Out?

Cliff told of a man, George Mueller, that wanted to be a missionary to poor Russians.  He had training upon training, but still was told he wasn’t ready to do God’s work.  He finally decided he was going to trust God.  He had no source of income, but he journaled his life as he went about doing what he felt led to do and it was amazing how money continued to show up as needed.  One story tells about how now he builds multi-million dollar orphanages, but in the beginning, he had opened an orphanage and was completely out of food and had no money to buy any.  He asked the orphans to come sit at the table and pray.  While they were praying, a bakery truck broke down and needed to give away the bread so it wouldn’t spoil.  God provided exactly what was needed.  He will do the same for us.

Things to remember

  • Live your life as an example to others.
  • Life is not about us, but those around us.
  • God loves YOU!

Sharing Wisdom

Cliff’s brother is at a point in his life where he needs encouragement without pressure.  Cliff sent him the book, “The Traveler’s Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success” by Andy Andrews.  His brother loves the book and re-reads sections of it often.  Cliff asked Tracy about his books, “Restored” and “Just Believe”.  Tracy suggested Cliff send his brother “Just Believe”.  It is based, in part, on ten principles ascribed to by Napoleon Hill and his philosophy of success in your life.

Listener Comments and Reviews

Tracy shared an iTunes comment from a listener and an email from another listener named Trey telling how this podcast has changed their thinking and is helping them to reshape their lives.  Trey says he is taking control of the questions he feeds his subconscious.

Trigger Thoughts

Tracy has started writing a new book titled, “Trigger Thoughts”. When something happens in our lives and we react a certain way, that reaction is based on the “truths” stored in our brains.  We can examine those reactions to discover, what in our past, causes that reaction.  To react differently, we need to determine how we feel about the thing that happened and if our “truth” needs adjusting or rewriting, then that is what we do.  We retrain our brain to react appropriately to that situation and we can then trigger our real truth.

Overcoming Guilt and Resentment

To overcome feelings triggered when we feel self-guilt, depression, revenge or resentment we should have the words, “It is forgiven” come to our mind, instead of our old trigger thought “Somebody has to pay or be punished.”

Cliff asked for clarification regarding the “guilt” feeling.  Cliff told of attending an event based on, “Growing Kids God’s Way” at which the phrase “constant state of potential guilt” was explained.  Tracy explained this was a case of a struggle with self-worth.  When we feel we are not worthy we need to remember:  We are okay.  We are not perfect, but nobody is perfect.  We are each a unique person.  There is only one of us and we have value.  We all effect people around us – it’s how we affect them that matters. Our experiences, our lives are valuable lessons to someone.

To recap, we have automatic triggers and we need to have our subconscious help our conscious self to recognize the trigger and adjust our thinking to change our reaction.

Inspirational Quote of the Day

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV ~ God via Paul the apostle

Things to remember

  • Find your trigger.
  • Adjust/rewrite your reaction based on truth.
  • You are valuable – you have worth.

Reaching Your Potential

Everybody has potential.  They are using it now; every day.  It’s about living your life in your mindset.  If you say, “I can”, then as long as it’s within your realm (barring things that would take extraordinary abilities, such as athletic abilities), then you can.  If you say, “I could never”, you’re right.  You never will. It is your mindset, your core belief system, which either advances or retards you.

The self-acclaimed “entrepreneurial shrink”, Peter Shallard, says “No matter who you are (or what your IQ is), you will answer every single mental question you pose yourself.  Therein lies the source of human potential.”

What Are You Feeding Yourself

If you want to reach your greatest potential, you much first believe you can achieve your dream and you must feed your subconscious positive thoughts, ask positive questions and give it positive assignments.  If you think about what you need to do to reach your goal, the subconscious, which works 24/7, will provide you with ideas to consider.  Rather than ask yourself things like, “Why don’t people like me?” or “What can go wrong?” ask yourself things like “What do people like about me?, or “What can I do to mitigate the risks?”.

Focus On The Solution

Cliff used the movie, “Apollo 13” as an example.  There were three astronauts, but only two could survive unless they would attach a round object in the square connection in the spacecraft.  No one knew how to solve the problem, but one man at mission control brought in a box of each part available to the men in the craft.  He said if they didn’t figure it out, the men would die.  Once they put their minds to the task of solution or else, they figured out how to do it.  We need to use that same approach when we have something we need to accomplish.

Tracy said one of God’s greatest gifts to us is the creative subconscious that works 24/7.  We just need to focus on the assignments we give it and remember to BE POSITIVE.

Inspirational Quote of the Day

“Opportunity will not interest itself in someone who is not interested in it.”  ~ Napoleon Hill

Understand Your “Why”

Tracy shared a URL his daughter-in-law sent him:  www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action.html

Mr. Sinek talks about the need to understand our “Why”, our purpose, our mission.  Why we do or want to do in life.  Once you know the why, the how and what will come.  Other PC companies just want to build computers and make money.  Apple designed Macs to be a lifestyle.  If you know the why, people will be interested in supporting your how and what.  The Successful Life Mindset podcast is successful because the “why” answer in known:  to share the principles to help people learn to live their lives to its fullest potential.  The “what” is a podcast and the “how” is by getting together once a week to talk and share our experiences.

Succeed Through Your Definiteness of Purpose

If you want to be successful, you must figure out/understand you why, your purpose.

If your only purpose is to make money, you are unlikely to inspire people.  The only way to truly be successful is to help others.  It’s internal; it sticks with you forever.

Cliff wants everything he does to entertain, teach, encourage and inspire others.

Things to remember

  • Know your “why”, the how and what will come.
  • Understand your core beliefs and adjust them, when required.
  • Use your subconscious to reach your greatest potential.
  • The first step is to believe!

Resistance

Cliff is going to Space Camp in Huntsville, AL next week.  He is able to accompany his daughter because he is finally at a place in his career that allows him to take some time off.  He used a new employee, a virtual assistant, which will help with scheduling appointments while he is gone.

Work On Your Business Not In It

Two books by Michael R. Gerber, “The E-Myth” and “The E-Myth Revisited” explain that many businesses fail because the founders are technicians that were inspired to start a business without a true entrepreneur’s outlook.  They are often too busy doing business to do the “fun” thing, the reason they started their business.

Learning to Delegate to Succeed

Some lessons learned from those books are that you must learn to delegate.  Some things you must do yourself, but if you delegate those things that you can, it will give you more time to do the important tasks only you can do.  You must learn to run the business without letting the business run you.  You have to have a mindset to be willing to let go.  Not every task will be done correctly the first time or as well as if you had done it yourself, but in time, the delegation of tasks will pay off.

Book quote:  “In fact, there is ultimately only one reason to create a business of your own, and that is to sell it!”

That quote is not always correct.  Some people have a goal to start a business because it allows them to do something they love.  If it is truly their passion, they may never sell it.

Paying Forward the Successful Life Mindset

Tracy read an email from a listener that shared information learned on the Successful Life Mindset podcast with a friend that is at a career crossroads.  Tracy and Cliff were glad to hear listeners are listening, learning, and sharing the new way of viewing life, they discuss each week.  It is important to share with others because no great success in life comes when it is centered on you.

Can Resistance Be A Benefit?

Resistance can be an important learning tool.  Tracy needed to have a physical exam while going through an adoption process in 2009.  His blood pressure was high.  The doctor asked about physical exercise and Tracy’s response was that he didn’t exercise.  Tracy used to run in college and decided to begin running again.  On his first day of running, he ran for about 30 seconds before he was tired and out of breath.  Eventually, after about 8 weeks, he was able to improve, little by little, until he was running about 40 minutes a day, which was his goal.

He lives in the Tulsa area and for the most part, his running routine was on level ground.  While in the Kansas City area, he went out of a run and encountered hills!  His legs burned and ached, but he finally got to the top of the hill and then going downhill was easy, but then came hill two.  He had even more trouble with the second hill, but he pushed on and finally made the entire run.  When he came to the first hill, his mind told him to turn back and take the easy way out – just run on the nice level grounds of the hotel, but he pushed himself and made it.  The point is when we meet resistance; we want to give up, to take the easy way out, and to refuse the challenge.  We learn from the resistance.  We like our life comfortable, but if we don’t challenge ourselves – physically, mentally and spiritually – we don’t grow.  So, don’t look at resistance as a bad thing; look at it as an opportunity.

Resistance Makes You Learn And Grow

Cliff said people have asked him now that’s he reached a level of success in his career, if he could go back, what would he change on his journey to success.  He knows parts were hard, real challenges, but he wouldn’t miss the learning experiences he’s had.  Not only did he learn such valuable lessons that he needed to learn, but his self-confidence has grown by getting through life’s lessons and it makes the success better.  He finally felt he was the man he needed to be in his business.  He knows how to take responsibility.

Be Passionate and Work Hard

We need to encourage others, but let them know there will be challenges.  Sometimes they might be better off not knowing all of the challenges they will face.  It could be daunting.  Like multi-level marketing, you can’t just sit back and let it happen – it won’t.  You have to work at it and encourage and coach those that work for you.  Multi-level marketing can be good or bad, depending on the people and their motivations when they are recruiting others.  You need to go into it with a passion, not looking for a second source of income.

Inspirational Quotes of the Day

“Big pay and little responsibility are circumstances seldom found together.”  ~ Napoleon Hill

“Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to cut all sources of retreat.  Only by doing so can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a burning desire to win – essential to success.”  ~ Napoleon Hill

Burn Your Ships and Don’t Quit

Cortez burned his ships to effectively remove the idea of retreat from the minds of his men.  Tracy had a friend having difficulty maneuvering a boat on a trailer at the boat ramp.  To insure success, Tracy removed the lynch pin from the trailer hitch, taking away the opportunity to continue to backup and pull forward repeatedly.  The result was success!  If we have an out, and times get tough, most will take the easy out.  For Cliff, it was when he was first starting out and the safety net of insurance sales was available.  His father very wisely told him he could not work part-time; he was an insurance agent or he was a podcaster.  His father wanted him to commit, reminding him he could not choose both careers.  Cliff’s career really took off once that safety net was gone.

Things to remember

  • There will be resistance; challenges, use them as opportunities.
  • Share life lessons with others to help yourself.
  • Burn your ships!
